Charlie is gone, and Lincoln finds that Lichfield Towers offers no sanctuary. With reminders of her at every turn, and employees threatening to mutiny, he must try to find the murderer who is killing supernaturals on his own. And keep the murderer away from Charlie.

When the strongman from the visiting Barnum and Bailey's circus is murdered, Lincoln suspects a link, but piecing together the clues becomes dangerous and difficult work. He can't afford to be distracted, yet he finds he can't concentrate fully on the task. Even worse, Seth's mother, the incomparable Lady Vickers, has come to stay.

ASHES TO ASHES is a bonus novella-length story, told entirely from Lincoln's point of view. It is shorter than the rest of the books in the Ministry of Curiosities series.

Does this novella explain why Lincoln did what he did to Charlie at the end of Book 4? Well, sorta, kinda, maybe - if you count robotically repeating over and over that now that Charlie is gone gone gone, he can get on with his life the way it used to be, and he'll forget her shortly and how everything was done for her own good because he wanted her to be safe. (I do not consider this sufficient explanation or justification for either thinking/believing this OR the manner in which he rejected her.)

We already know Lincoln actually believes his action will keep her safe, that sending her away is for better for everyone, that she will make friends, that she will be treated like a princess (thanks to his money paying the bills), that she will be supported and nurtured to become all that she can become, and that she will sleep in a warm bed living happily ever after. We also know he thinks this also means he can also go back to the life he had, and he will forget her as if she had never been there (which says a lot about perceived value). ALL that was said at the end of book 4 and in short snippets in prior books every time he talked about sending her away. It was not enough for me then or now.

Lincoln's lame statements endlessly repeat throughout the novella. The litany may not be a real explanation, but it certainly is evocative of the EXCRUCIATINGLY slow realization flitting across what is left of his brain that maybe, perhaps, possibly, Lincoln might have, could have made a mistake. And, likewise, maybe, perhaps, possibly, he might not be able to forget her as if she never existed at all. It does convey angst and a level of self-inflicted pain that I understand is mean to evoke sympathy for him. To me, it just felt boring and increasingly irritating enough that I just want to bash Lincoln's head even more. Lincoln telling Seth and Gus they should forget about giving Charlie a birthday present so as not to give her false expectations --> hand me a cast iron skillet to go along with the baseball bat I already wanted to whack him with. Speaking of those dear Lichfield boys - you rock!

Saying what he believes does not explain why or HOW he could possibly believe this drek. What shared experience with Charlie and the Tower boys supports these conclusions? None. What conversation with Charlie ever indicated her desire to life the genteel life of a lady or spend her days doing anything one might learn at a real finishing school or a hellish prison meant to break the spirit? What aspect of the rigid social caste system that Charlie and Lincoln discussed in Paris suddenly evaporated upon their return? Lincoln must have suffered a brain injury to have become so detached from reality that he could fail to expend even one thought on the logical results/interpretations that others would make about his treatment of Charlie: 1) it IS a victory for the Committee/Julia AND 2) it illustrates that Charlie is just another 'wayward girl' cast off by a rich man once he's done with her.

To think Charlie would ever be happy leading the fairy tale life he has vocalized means he never listened to a word she said, has no concept of who she is or what her real options are in their society, and is a secret Henry Higgins toad just waiting to ask for his slippers. His ongoing silence in the face of thinly veiled society trash talk about Charlie (e.g. Julia's discussion of the circus dancer and the obscenity of mistresses being taken into one's home and introduced to servants - as she thinks Lincoln did with Charlie) is starting to look as much like agreement, as it does pansy-ass cowardice. And, I am starting to wonder just how much of an intellectual simpleton Lincoln must be - given the depth of his reality blindness and his inability to grasp the obvious. Every book in this series thus far has included a kidnapping, abduction or assault on Charlie, which involved a rescue utilizing her intelligence and the support/protection of Lincoln and the Lichfield family - what MORON could think sending her off to the outer rim of society without friends or protection will leave her safe? I think its entirely possible that Lincoln was lobotomized in his stateroom on the way home from Paris, but such is not revealed here.

In summary, LIFE without Charlie is heap of passionless dust, devoid of interest in pretty much anything. Without Charlie to break up the monotony of the usual little mystery in this novella, I skimmed from one 'page' listlessly to the next. I am not even sure if the "who done it" was even solved, and don't really care either way. Ashes, ashes we all fall down.

Ashes To Ashes A Ministry of Curiosities Novella The Ministry of Curiosities Book 5 edition by CJ Archer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I read all of this series of books and again CJ Archer had me on the edge of my seat. As soon as I finished one book I had to buy the next and get started reading it. It was exciting till the very end and I loved the connection the main characters had together. So, romantic, completely in love with Lincoln and Charlie, you will too.
This series is different from what I have read so far and was well done. I enjoyed the dynamics between the main group of characters and watching them change throughout the series. And the mystery storylines were each unique though keeping to an overall theme. There were plots and sub-plots to keep me entertained throughout the series.
I am enjoying this series as a whole though not as much as the Watchmaker series - all the characters are well written and developed in that one. I have to admit that this book has been my favorite in the Ministry series so far primarily because Charlie isn't in it. I find her character too inconsistent, immature and annoying - I know she is young but she takes away from the story and the other characters. Still, the author has a way of keeping the story interesting enough that I want to know what happens next.
I told myself I'd skip this one since Charlie wasn't in it and it dragged for me at first, but by halfway through it got much better. The only thing good about Lincoln's point of view was to show that he is missing Charlie, although I had reservations about the real reason why. I loved loved that Seth and Gus stood up to him. The appearance of Seth's mother Lady Vickers in the household is delightful. I'd love to see more of her in future books. I can't believe how fast I'm reading these books or how much I'm enjoying the series.
Strong novella, great complement to the series. It’s interesting to get to see things from Lincoln’s POV, and the author does a great job of switching the voices. His character has always been a dark one, and we see more depth here. The plot line is in perfect harmony with the main series, but intriguing and new as well. This novella does not resolve the issues at the end of the last book that were not so great, but it does give us a better understanding of why Lincoln has acted the way he has with Charlie and we glimpse the cracks in the persona he has been taught all his life to have. Can’t wait for the next full book!
This isn't a book, or even a novella. It's a few chapters and took me an hour to read while having coffee. The story is good but this small section didn't justify the wait for another book in the series. Lincoln is agonizing over his decision & Gus & Seth leave. That's all that happens. Wait for the series to be finished or you'll be very disappointed.
This is marked as book 5 in the series, but it’s a novella — the price does reflect that (it’s cheaper than the full books) so it’s not like I felt ripped off or anything, but I don’t believe it contributes a whole lot to the overall story and I kind of wish I had skipped it.

It’s also written from Lincoln‘s viewpoint, and frankly I didn’t find him very likable here; I guess seeing him from Charlie’s viewpoint was much more flattering, because he is kind of odd, aggressive and neurotic.

The storyline doesn’t really progress here so reading it didn’t really help with the suspense, particularly as it ends in a cliff-hanger.

Just move on straight to From The Ashes, do not pass go, do not collect 200.
