“Then don’t” were the last words Lisa Schenke spoke to her eighteen-year-old son, Tim, as he walked out the door, saying he would not return. Tim died by suicide less than an hour later when he stood in front of a moving train.
Follow Lisa through the years just after Tim’s death as she grieves and rebuilds her relationships with her family, other struggling youth, the community, God, and—most difficult of all—herself. Lisa also explores Tim’s past—his numerous accomplishments and his sincerity, as well as his depression and drug use. Lisa’s journey is made all the more challenging by an unprecedented number of teenage suicides in her small seaside community that follow Tim’s. With these deaths, Lisa becomes an accidental counselor to others who stand in the ripples of suicide.
Without Tim was written with the mission to help other families, to provide encouragement and inspiration to parents and all individuals who are grieving as a result of suicide, as well as to support teens and young adults who are struggling with their own sense of self-worth.

To the Schenke family - condolences on the loss of Tim. I know it's been some years now but I can't imagine the feeling of loss of a child/brother would ever get easier. I read these books where parents have suffered such a terrible loss and tragedy only so that I can try and be a better parent. With a 14-year old daughter and 10-year old son, I see the stresses our kids face in today's crazy world and appreciate the insight from authors such as yourself, Lisa, to recognize when I need to be more aware of certain friends and situations - teenage years are so tumultuous and I hope to help guide and navigate these waters with my kids with my eyes wide open. Thanks for sharing your journey. RIP Tim xxProduct details

Without Tim A Son Fall to Suicide A Mother Rise from Grief edition by Lisa Schenke SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
Lisa completely opens up her heart & soul, and holds nothing back from the reader. Very well written, and incredibly moving. Such a brave woman, to give so much of herself, to help others! A must read for anyone who's ever lost a loved one to suicide. Thank you for sharing your story.
I would have never thought that I would have read a book like this, but my own struggles with suicide brought me to it. When I read Lisa's book, I realized even more how one's own struggles was a struggle for their loved ones where everyone was lost in the struggle. That being said, this is an account that speaks to a real problem with mental illness where a son was lost and a family was changed forever. It is told in such a real way that it makes you think about what if it happened to your family. Bravo Lisa, you gave us your family's story so we may never realize your pain and loss. Rest in Peace, Tim !
Very interesting read. Thankfully I can only imagine the loss felt, but my heart goes out to all the survivors. I enjoyed the writing style with insight into pre and post suicide life. I understand the importance of talking about Tim, but unfortunately see how often others are uncomfortable and shy away from it. Big Hugs to Lisa for having the courage to share and continued effort to prevent future loss of lives.
I couldn't put Without Tim down and read it right through in one sitting. Lisa writes fluently and simply telling her story as it is. It is a compelling and compassionate read. Lisa leaves no stone unturned in trying to understand what happened to Tim and what she could have done differently as a mother. She does this without self-pity or blame. I too am a mother whose son chose to end his own life and so Lisa's honest account and search resonated strongly. I found great comfort reading the book. At the end of my marathon read I was left with two very strong feelings. Firstly, it slowly became clear to me, despite Lisa's grappling with what should could have done differently and did she do enough, that we cannot control our children's lives. Secondly, that we can survive and we will survive our incomprehensible and impossible losses. We will be changed but with time we will embrace life again... perhaps more so. Out of all the many, many books I have read about suicide from a mother's perspective - this is one of the best!

I was pleasantly surprised at the level of writing in this book, considering Schenke is not an author by trade. Writing about death is difficult for anyone, but writing about your own child's death by suicide? Excruciating. Yet she handled it adroitly and honestly. There were details both ugly and beautiful. I'm a mother, about her age, and even have a son with similar character traits to the way she describes Tim -- I could really relate to so many things she said. September is Suicide Prevention Month -- keep reaching out to each other, everyone!
Dark and tragic. I used this book for a research paper I was writing. Biography. It really shows the impact that happens on family when a loved one dies by suicide. It can really increase understanding, but REMEMBER it is only ONE perspective and ONE story. Everyone experiences complicated reactions to such a tragedy and learning the stories and understanding that they are all different and difficult helps to greater the understanding of the people and the world around us.
This book was very well written going back & forth between the time before her son took his life to what she & her family went through after he did. Being someone who can relate to losing people, some extremely close to suicide this is a book that kids should read as well as parents, teachers & anyone else who deals with kids. If one person reading this book can stop another from taking their life or if the person stops themselves from taking their own life after reading the pain & forever lose their family & friends feel, its done its job. Things are tough & suicide might seem like an answer but its not & the pain for those left behind is eternal. This book is hard to put down once you start reading it.
